The theme for February is love, and so, there is no better time to incorporate new ways of loving our natural hair into our routines. If you are looking to give your hair some extra care and attention, we have curated 11 tips just for you.
1. Deep Condition Regularly
After shampooing your hair, treat it to extra nourishment, and moisture with a deep conditioning treatment. You can do this by letting your natural body heat warm-up the product throughout your hair with a plastic cap on, or to speed up the process, you can use a thermal heat cap that emits its own heat.
In either case, we would recommend deep conditioning for at least 20 minutes, and every 2 weeks as a minimum. Deep conditioning can also help to promote softer, shinier and healthier hair. Our Argan Oil Deep Treatment Masque can be used for this treatment.
2. Be Gentle With Your Hair
Afro and curly hair textures are very fragile, and so they need to be handled with care. The next time you are styling or manipulating your hair in any way, be mindful of the tools you use. Finger detangling is a great way to minimise breakage when styling, or you can opt for a large tooth comb or extra conditioner to get the job done.
Think of your hair like a project or baby. You have to be patient with it, dealing with it gently. When you view your hair this way, you’re more likely to see a greater return and enjoy healthier and happier hair. Plus you will be well on your way to loving your natural hair.
3. use A Silk/ Satin Headscarf or Pillowcase at night
Do you have a silk/satin pillow or pillowcase? If you don’t, you definitely should! Cotton causes friction against afro and curly hair textures and can draw moisture from them causing dryness. Whereas, silk and satin help your hair to glide across their surface, as well maintaining their moisture levels. These types of fabric, when used for pillowcases are also great for your skin when sleeping or even napping. So, by investing in a silk or satin pillowcase, you will be showing your skin some love, as well as your natural hair.
4. Embrace the versatility of your natural hair
Afro and curly hair textures are incredibly versatile. You can have them in their natural states or create countless beautiful styles, with them that you can wear loose, in updos or even as a protective measure. Experimenting with what your hair can do is a great way to learn about your texture and what suits it best.
5. Learn About the history of natural hair
Afro and curly hair textures have such a rich and diverse history. The more you learn about it, the more you will appreciate it and fall more in love with its strength and what it represents. You may be surprised to find out many things you may not know about the history of black hair.
6. Be Inspired By Other Naturalistas
There are a number of natural hair YouTubers that share their hair journeys. Whether they are transitioning from a relaxer, doing the big chop or have had natural hair their whole life – there is a range of stories available for you to gain inspiration and learn from. BBK SuperNatural is one of our biggest inspirations
7. be Conscious of What You Consume
Healthy hair is not only linked to what you put in your hair; it also includes what you eat and your general health. Your diet can affect the health of your hair. Eating a healthy and balance diet will only enhance your natural hair journey. It will also improve your general health, helping with energy levels too. So, eat your hair healthy!
8. think positively about your hair
You get the most out of your natural hair journey when you are patient with yourself. There may be moments where you get fed up. However, instead of giving up completely, think closely about why you may be feeling weary towards your hair. What’s the root (excuse the pun) of your problem? Is it dry? Maybe it needs extra moisture. Is it other people’s opinions? These are things that we all experience and when we commit to addressing them positively and thinking about them with optimism, we can find better solutions.
9. Hot Oil Treatments
Incorporating hot oil treatments into your hair care routine are another way you can show appreciation to your hair. Oils like jojoba oil, avocado oil, and even coconut oil are popular options for hot oil treatments. Doing this at least once a month can help to promote smoother, shinier hair.
10. Connect With the natural hair community
By having a support system of people who are also on their natural hair journey, you can access another source of hair care education, as well as additional tips for loving your natural hair. There are a range of Facebook groups, for example, dedicated to sharing natural hair journeys. These are great places to share your journey and learn from others. You can invite your friends to be a part of them too!
11. Speak Positively about your hair
Lastly, remember that words have power and so using positive language when speaking about your hair can improve your mindset and the way you view your hair too!
