As Love is the theme of February, we thought we’d curate a list of how you can show your natural hair some love, with these tips.
After shampooing and conditioning your hair, treat it with a deep condition. You can either do this by letting your natural body heat stimulate the product throughout your hair with a plastic cap on, or to speed up the process, use a portable conditioning cap that emits heat. In either case, we would recommend deep conditioning for at least 20 minutes, every 2 weeks as a maximum. Deep conditioning helps enhance moisture, detangle and soften the feel of your hair. Our Intense Detangling Leave-In Conditioner can be used to carry out this treatment.
Be Gentle With Your Hair
Black hair textures, although thicker than other hair types, are still very fragile. You can’t just run any comb through black hair. Think of your hair like a project or baby. You have to be patient with it, dealing with it gently. When you view your hair this way, you’re more likely to see a greater return in healthier and happier hair.
Silk/ Satin Headscarf or Pillowcase
Do you have a silk/ satin pillow or pillowcase? If you don’t, you definitely should! Cotton causes friction against black hair textures, whereas silk or satin helps maintains the moisture you’ve put into your hair. These materials for pillowcases are also great for your skin when sleeping or even napping.
Embrace Its Versatility
Black hair is incredibly versatile. You can have it curly, in an afro, straight, do protective styles and so much more! Experimenting with what your hair can do is a great way to learn about your texture and what suits it best.
Learn About Black Hair History
Black hair has such a rich and diverse history. The more you learn about it, the more you will appreciate it and fall more in love with its strength and what it represents. You may be surprised to find out many things you may not know about the history of black hair.
Be Inspired By Other Naturalistas
There are a variety of many natural hair YouTubers now that share their hair journeys. Whether they are transitioning from a relaxer, doing the big chop or have always been natural there is a range of stories available for you to gain inspiration and learn from. BBK SuperNatural is one of our faves for this.
Conscious of What You Consume
Healthy hair isn’t just directly linked to what you put in your hair. It also includes what you eat and your general health. Your diet can affect the health of your hair. Eating healthy meals, like salads and fruits, will only enhance your natural hair journey. It will also improve your general health, helping with energy levels too. So, eat your hair healthy!
